It coincided with the anniversary of the defeat of the Serbs against the Turks in 1389. The Austrian and Hungarian Empire forcibly annexed the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina to Imperial property in 1908 and declared its intention to annex the Serbs as well, provoking the discontent of the Serb nationalists, who were calling for an independent state that included Serbs and Bosnia and Herzegovina, In the course of the passage of the Archduke in his car, a Serb youth emerged from the spectators on Ferdinand’s convoy and threw a bomb at his vehicle, injuring the guard officer at the rear of the vehicle.

On the same day, while the Archduke was on his way to the hospital to visit the injured officer, a young Serbian man named “Gavrilo Principe” shot the Archduke with consecutive bullets. He and his wife were killed immediately. The incident was the spark that ignited the World War I. Austria and Hungary blamed On the Serbian government, and made sure that Germany stood by its side and declared war on July 28, 1914, against Serbia, lasted until 1918 and ended with the surrender of Germany.

The day chosen for the visit of the Crown Prince of Austria was bad coincided with the anniversary of the battle of Kosovo, the national holiday of the Serbs, and the security measures were not good, as gunmen with pistols and grenades standing on both sides of the road that is scheduled to pass the Arshidok convoy, the first bomb was thrown on the convoy, but did not explode, it rolled on the car then exploded and injured some of the escorts. This resulted in a change in the procession route. During that time, “Gavrilo Principe” stood on the corner of the road. He jumped on the car and shot the Archduke and General “Putyurik”, the commander of the Bosnian army, killing Archduke and his wife, while the General survived.

The assassination provoked Austria’s vengeance against the Serbs, ignited the World War I, that broke out in Europe and quickly spread to the rest of the world between 1914 and 1918. The preliminaries of the war had moved from the turbulent atmosphere between Austria and Hungary to invade Serbia, to Russia that declared war on Austria, Germany entered the war as an ally of Austria, and France and Britain entered as allies of Russia. Chemical weapons were first used in this war, and civilians were first bombed from the skies in history.

World War I resulted in human casualties not seen before. The ruling and dominant dynasties fell on Europe, which originated since the Crusades. The political map of Europe was changed.
